INDUSTRIAL VISIT

THE HINDU

OBJECTIVE OF THE VISIT:

                    It is a dream of every journalism student and the budding journalists, to visit the National newspaper The Hindu and to meet the extraordinary journalists.

PURPOSE OF THE VISIT:

Ø  To witness the working environment of a national newspaper and to explore all the departments, from the beat to the desk.

Ø  To talk with the working journalists.

Ø  To meet Mr. Ram, the chairman, to have an interactive session with him by making use of the opportunity and to equip ourselves to fit in the industry.

Ø  To release the wall newspaper in The Hindu by Mr. Ram and Mr. MukundPadmanabhan, the senior editor.

 

Four senior editors, a legal advisor interacted nearly for 3 ½ hours and answered the questions of the students. Mr. Ram spent 45 minutes with the students and interacted with them.

 

Mr. Ram released the wall newspaper and he also suggested to print more copies and to circulate them inside the college.

 

 

Students created a special edition tabloid, including the milestones of The Hindu, which was appreciated by everyone.

A senior associate editor, who is a long term employee in The Hindu welcomed the students and helped them in exploring all the departments.

Got permission to visit the press that is located at Maraimalai Nagar and The Hindu’s Tamil newspaper office.

Proposed to join with The Hindu in the area of community journalism. The students has also asked for doing an internship with The Hindu.

Over all, it was a very good learning experience for the students and the platform helped them to identify their own talents that will lead them to sustain in the industry.

EXTENSION ACTIVITIES

Publication Division

 

Department initiated to publish a campus wall newspaper SDNB MAIL launched by Mr. Ram, Chairman, Hindu Group of publications.

Department has initiated journal Aram to encourage the writing skills of the students. The first edition SAKTHI was released by Mr. Kamal Hassan, actor and politician.

 

Students of journalism designed a newsletter for Tamil Isai kalluri which was launched on MargazhliUtsavam.

 

STUDENTS ACHIEVEMENT

Department of journalism bagged the overall trophy for Post graduate departments Diva -2019, an interdepartmental cultures of SDNB.

 

SEMINAR AND WORKSHOP

·         Journalism and Communication students participated in a panel discussion on Community Policing and Women’s Safety organized by American Consulate on 6th March, 2019.

·         Attended the seminar on Research methodology and plagiarism checking organized by TN Open University.

·         Journalism and Communication attended seminar on Sahitya Akademi and School of Tamil and Cultural Studies Tamilnadu Open University.

·         Organized a workshop on Newspaper making using Adobe Indesign software

INTER DEPARTMENTAL AND INTER COLLEGIATE COMPETITIONS

THANDORA – 2K19, ECHO YOUR VOICE FOR SOCIAL CONSTRUCTION

 

The Department of Journalism & Communication conducted two days Inter-Departmental and Inter-Collegiate competitions, “Thandora-2k19, Echo your Voice for Social construction”.

The competitions were designed to tap the talents of the students and to shape their skills to take up freelancing job in Media industry.

The competitions were structured to evoke the students’ creativity in positive way to address the social issues.

The seven various on-stage and off-stage competitions

 Theatre, Analyze & Argue, Memes, Photography, News Reading, RJ, Beat News brought out the creative side of the students.

Eminent personalities from the Industry were invited to judge the competitions. Mr. Arun and Mr. Aravind (Reality show organizers and casting directors), Mr. K. Krishna Kumar (A leading journalist), Mr. Dinesh Kumar (Photographer), Ms. Karthika Devi (News Presenter), Ms. Ashwini Govindaraju (Radio Jockey) were the judges for the competitions and RJ Karun distributed the prizes on the valedictory.

The students’ energy level and their enthusiasm triggered the judges to have an interactive session with them and share their experience.

The Department has also inaugurated its PR Campaign- Voice Booth- Cast Your Voice. The campaign works with the vision of collecting the opinion of  the general public on any selected social issue and raising them as questions to the relevant experts. Mr. Gunasekaran, Senior Editor, News 18 Tamil Nadu inaugurated the PR Campaign’s Voice Booth and cast his voice and signature on the topic, ‘Stop Abuse’.

Nearly 14 Departments and 8 colleges took part in the competitions. B.Com (General) won the over-all trophy, and B.Com (A&F) were the Runners.

 

VOICE BOOTH – CAST YOUR VOICE

The Department of Journalism & Communication of SDNB Vaishnav College for Women has inaugurated a Campaign on the concept of ‘Voice Booth-Cast your Voice’. It works with the vision of collecting the opinion of the general public and the student community on any selected social issue and raising those opinions as questions to the relevant experts.

Mr. Gunasekaran, Senior Editor, News 18 Tamil Nadu has inaugurated the campaign’s Voice booth and has cast his voice on this month’s topic ‘Stop Abuse’. This campaign was held from March 1 till March 20. The booth was set up inside the college and the students and staff members registered their opinion on different types of abuse that are taking place in today’s society, and how to stop them. Along with their voices, the students and the Public have also cast their opinions and signatures on the signature banner that is displayed on the booth.
